NDIS Daily Living Support: What’s Covered and What to Expect

If you’re new to the NDIS, the funding categories can feel a little overwhelming. One of the most commonly used — and most practical — is daily living support. It’s the part of your plan that helps you get through your day with confidence, whether that means help with getting dressed in the morning, preparing a meal, keeping your home tidy, or getting to appointments.

In this post, we break down exactly what NDIS daily living support covers in NSW, how the funding works, and what you can realistically expect from your support worker.

What Is Daily Living Support Under the NDIS?

Daily living support sits within your Core Supports funding, specifically under the budget category called Assistance with Daily Life. It’s designed to help you with personal, domestic, and practical tasks that might be difficult to manage independently due to your disability.

Unlike some other NDIS supports, Core Supports funding is relatively flexible. In many cases, you can shift money between daily living and other Core categories like community access or transport, depending on what you need most at any given time. Your Support Coordinator or plan manager can help you navigate this.

What Daily Living Tasks Are Covered?

Daily living support can cover a broad range of tasks. Common examples include:

Personal care

  • Showering, bathing, and personal hygiene

  • Dressing and grooming

  • Assistance with mobility, transfers, and positioning

  • Medication prompts or administration (where trained)

Meal preparation

  • Planning and cooking meals

  • Grocery shopping support

  • Assistance with eating and drinking where required

Household tasks

  • Cleaning, vacuuming, and laundry

  • Dishes and kitchen tidying

  • Basic home organisation

Transport and getting around

  • Accompanying you to appointments, errands, or activities

  • Assistance using public transport

  • Driving you to destinations where needed

Not every task will be relevant to everyone. Your support plan should reflect your specific needs, goals, and the level of assistance that’s right for you.

Using Your Daily Living Funding Flexibly

One of the great things about Core Supports is the flexibility it offers. If your circumstances change week to week — for example, a family member is helping out more one week, or you have a medical appointment that needs transport support — you can adjust how your hours are used.

The key is to work with a provider who communicates openly with you and genuinely tailors support to your life, rather than locking you into a rigid schedule. A good support worker will check in regularly and adjust as your needs change.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

To bring this to life, here’s a real-world example of how daily living support might work for a young adult living independently.

What a Typical Day Might Look Like — Alex, 24, Central Coast

Morning

Alex’s support worker arrives at 8am to help with showering, dressing, and getting ready for the day.
They also assist with making breakfast and tidying the kitchen.

Late morning

Together they head to a local appointment in Newcastle. The support worker assists with transport and navigating the clinic.

Afternoon

Back home, they work through some household tasks — vacuuming, putting on laundry, and prepping ingredients for dinner.

Evening

Alex completes dinner independently using the prepped ingredients. Their support worker has finished for the day.

Alex’s support is consistent, scheduled around his routine, and focused on building confidence — not creating dependence.

Of course, every participant’s day looks different. Support can be as minimal or as hands-on as you need — the goal is always to help you live the life you want.
