NDIS Plan Management vs Self-Managed: Which Option Is Right for You?

If you’re new to NDIS, the first thing you need to decide is which NDIS plan management option. Every NDIS plan is managed in one of three ways: plan-managed, self-managed, or NDIA-managed. We understand this decision affects flexibility, admin load, and provider choice. It’s normal to feel uncertain at first, but learning about each option can give you confidence. Your choice will influence how you interact with providers and manage your funding day-to-day.

Read through this post to help you choose the NDIS plan management option that's right for your needs. Today, we’ll focus on plan management vs. self-management.

Definition of Terms

Plan-Managed NDIS plan

In this plan management option, a plan manager is part of your journey. A registered plan manager (who could be an individual or an organisation) handles your invoices, tracks budgets, and handles compliance.

Self-Managed NDIS plan

Being self-managed means you, as a participant (or your nominee), have full control over where you spend your funding. The participant pays providers directly and manages their own claims. This option also allows you to choose both registered and unregistered providers, giving you even more flexibility.

NDIA-Managed NDIS plan

The National Disability Insurance Agency manages provider payments directly. This is usually the default option offered when you sign up. However, we won’t go into further detail on this option.

Best for People who want flexibility without the admin. People who want maximum control and don't mind managing the paperwork.

Who tends to suit plan management

Plan management is a great fit for people who want providers paid quickly and looking for the flexibility to use both registered and unregistered providers. If you prefer not to handle invoicing, budgets, or spreadsheets yourself, this option can take the administrative burden off your shoulders. Having a Support Coordinator already involved can also make the plan-managed option a better fit for you.

With plan management, you have a partner who handles the paperwork and compliance while still enjoying the autonomy and input into how your funding is spent.

Who tends to suit self-managed

This plan suits you if you’re confident with admin, want maximum control and visibility, are comfortable negotiating directly with providers, or want to manage everything in one place.

Participants need to manage payments, keep receipts and invoices, monitor their funding throughout the plan period, and make sure they don't overspend or use funds for supports that aren't eligible. However, the extra flexibility and control mean taking on more responsibility than other NDIS plan management options.

If you’re organised, confident with administrative tasks, and value having full control over your supports, self-management can be an empowering way to manage your NDIS plan.

Can You Mix Plan Management and Self-Management?

Yes. You don't have to choose just one way to manage your entire NDIS plan. Many participants use a hybrid approach to their NDIS plan, where some funding categories are self-managed while others are plan-managed.

For example, you might self-manage your Core Supports so you can choose providers and make payments yourself, while having your Capacity Building supports plan managed so a plan manager takes care of invoices and administration. This gives you the flexibility to take control where it suits you, while reducing the administrative workload for the parts of your plan you'd rather not manage. If you're unsure which combination is right for you, you can discuss your preferences during your planning or plan reassessment meeting.
