Supporting Mental Wellbeing Every Day: Better Care's Approach to Psychosocial Disability
Mental health support requires more than someone willing to listen. It’s a skill that requires consistency, trust, patience and understanding.
At Better Care Community Support Services, these values guide how we work with people living with psychosocial disability. Our approach is grounded in compassion, dignity, professionalism and collaboration, with support shaped around each participant’s goals, circumstances and daily experience.
For participants and families across Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and the wider Hunter region, we aim to provide reliable support that helps people build confidence, strengthen independence and stay connected to their communities.
Understanding psychosocial disability
Psychosocial disability refers to the impact that mental health conditions can have on a person’s ability to function within society.
The experience is different for everyone. A person may need support with routines, household tasks, social connection, appointments, community participation or building the confidence and skills needed to work towards their goals.
The right support should recognise the individual, rather than focusing only on a diagnosis.
A consistent and flexible approach to mental health support
At Better Care, we understand that mental health can change from day to day. Someone may feel confident and motivated one day and find everyday tasks much harder the next.
That is why flexibility is an important part of our approach.
Our support workers aim to provide trauma-informed, person-centred support that respects each participant’s lived experience and choices. We also prioritise consistent worker matching, helping participants build relationships with support workers who understand their preferences, routines and goals.
Our team has mental health training and relevant experience to provide appropriate, professional support. Our team members also hold relevant qualifications, including a Certificate IV in Mental Health.
The goal is not to take over and make decisions for them. We work alongside the participant and provide the right level of support to help them move towards greater independence.
Supporting a range of mental health needs
Better Care supports NDIS participants living with a range of psychosocial disabilities and mental health conditions, including:
Anxiety
Depression
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Bipolar disorder
Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
Schizophrenia
Every person experiences their mental health differently, even when they share the same diagnosis. Our focus is therefore on understanding the individual, their goals and the type of support that works for them.
Why consistency matters
For many people living with psychosocial disability, building trust with a support worker takes time.
Having different workers regularly coming in and out of someone’s life can make it harder to establish that trust. It can also mean participants need to repeatedly adjust to a new person and explain their routines and preferences.
That is why Better Care prioritises dedicated support teams and consistent worker matching wherever possible.
A familiar support worker can recognise changes in a participant’s mood or routine, understand what helps them feel comfortable and provide support that reflects their individual goals. Over time, that consistency can create a stronger foundation for confidence, communication and independence.
A real example of what consistent support can make possible
One Better Care participant in Lake Macquarie experienced significant challenges with substance use and their mental health.
With consistent, empathetic support, they made the decision to become sober and began working towards a very different future.
Their goals extended well beyond managing day-to-day support. They started getting out into the community, working towards their driver's licence and learning practical skills for managing their home.
That included cleaning, budgeting, grocery shopping and preparing meals. They also began developing more positive social interactions and building confidence in everyday situations.
Today, the participant is thriving and continuing to build a life around their own goals.
There was no single moment that changed everything. Progress came through consistent support, encouragement and giving the participant space to make their own choices and work towards them.
That is what person-centred mental health support can look like in practice.
Working alongside the wider care team
Mental health support works best when the people around a participant can communicate and work towards shared goals.
For referrers across the Hunter region, Better Care welcomes collaboration with GPs, psychologists, Support Coordinators, allied health professionals and other members of a participant’s support network.
Clear communication helps ensure support workers understand relevant goals and can provide day-to-day assistance that complements the work being done by other professionals, with appropriate participant consent.
If you are looking for NDIS mental health support in Lake Macquarie, Cessnock or the wider Hunter region, our team is available to discuss a participant’s needs and whether Better Care may be an appropriate fit.
